Comment on the visit to ballet “The Nutcracker” at VDNKh, pavilion 71
my 4.5-year-old daughter and I, attended an excursion in the 71 pavilion with a performance from ballet “The Nutcracker”.
We were satisfied with the visit. The project itself is interesting as educationally and culturally for schoolchildren, because before the start of the performance, the plot itself was told, and the children were already interested and understood the ballet performance itself.

“The Nutcracker” Christmas exhibition at VDNKh tells the story of the creation of the famous ballet and its characters. The exposition presents sketches of costumes by artist A. Kostin for “The Nutcracker” ballet staged by Y. Vetrov, costumes of the characters from different times, and there is also a collection of rocking horses of the 19th century. The sketches of the costumes created by A. Kostin are of particular interest, of course.
In the center of the exposition are the sketches of costumes for the main characters of the fairy tale: the Nutcracker, Marie and Drosselmeyer. Each sketch is thought out so that the character’s costume reflects its inner essence, character: the lightness and tenderness of Marie is emphasized with a white dress with ruffled sleeves, the Nutcracker’s strength and inflexibility with a military uniform, Drosselmeyer’s fantasy and uniqueness – his tailcoat with a white scarf, hairstyle. Very interestingly, the artist makes a decision on the costumes of fairy-tale characters: the Mouse King, the dwarf, the chimney sweep. So, for example, the Mouse King has not one head, as is usually the case in ballet, but three (two heads are put on hands), and a ladder is drawn on the chimney sweep’s costume as a sign of his activity and the right sleeve resembles a pipe brush.
Also, the costumes of the dolls from different countries of the world are interesting – from India, China, France, Russia, Spain. It cannot be said that the artist creates a costume that fully corresponds to the culture of the country; rather, he highlights the distinctive features of each culture and creates a collective image that would look bright and convincing on stage.
Kostin performs the costumes of Marie’s parents, brother and relatives in the Biedermeier style, which was widespread in the first half of the 19th century in Germany. Such costumes create the necessary atmosphere, transfer the viewer to the space and time of Hoffmann’s fairy tale.
In general, we can say that the sketches of Kostin’s costumes, in my opinion, came out very successful and it is a pity that it was not possible to see them on stage.

Today have been at the New Year’s exhibition-tree “The Nutcracker”. Thanks to the organizers. Beautifully designed expositions, ballet dancers performed their parts superbly. There were treats not only for children, but also for parents. We took many beautiful pictures in the spirit of Christmas both at the exhibition and with ballet dancers against the background of an amazingly decorated Christmas tree right on the stage.
